Moshi Town

Moshi town is a good sized town, not too big and not too small, nestled in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. It is 45 minutes drive from Kilimanjaro, and a little over an hour from Arusha. Arusha is a town, but a big one and the most economically important in the northern section of Tanzania.
Moshi has a lot of quite charm to it, especially in the low season (between January and June) and although it is by no means over-run by tourists, there are enough foreigners here that you will not feel isolated, as many volunteer agencies have volunteers in the town all year round. It is also the closest town for climbing Kili and so the town gets tourists staying here before a Kili climb or resting after. There are a few nice restaurants and one or two late bars around.
It is close to Arusha National Park (ANP), Kilimanjaro National Park and the Pare mountains, and to the Northern Safari Circuit. There is a lot to do on your days off like taking a bus to shop in Arusha (or visit the Rwandan trials), go hiking in the mountains, on a game drive or canoeing in ANP or on a day’s cultural tour of a Maasai or Pare village.
Usually volunteers stay in the nicer areas of town (on the west and north side) in large rented houses belonging to the organization they are with. On the eastern side of the town is where the poorer areas are located with many people living in cramped mud huts, the rate of AIDs is very high and there are many orphans living with relatives or neighbours. It is still a very friendly area of town as the locals’ associate white people with volunteers and so know you are here to help and respect you for that. You are a minor celebrity as you walk through town though!
The projects
There are numerous different ways you can help here in Moshi and out of moshi especial in Maasai stapes, and we would assume any of the other major towns in Tanzania.
